What is the Compatibility Tester in Tomodachi Life?

The Compatibility Tester is one of the small but beloved facilities on your island in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. You can find it inside the Town Hall once you have at least two male and two female residents living on the island and have solved 30 problems for them. It is the same Tester that returned from the original 3DS Tomodachi Life (2014) and from Tomodachi Collection (2009, Japan only).

Inside the Tester there are two separate functions. Compatibility Rating gives any pair of Miis a score from 0% to 100% with a label, a short description, and its own little music sting. Compatibility Forecaster previews the next in-game week across four categories: Work and Study, Chats, Leisure, and Love. The Love category only appears for pairs eligible for romance.

Each 10% bracket of the Rating has its own personality. A 0% pair is the famous one where both Miis literally try to escape the screen. A 100% pair is treated as a perfect couple, complete with celebratory animation and chime. Living the Dream also widens the romance rules so that same-sex pairs can receive a romance rating, which the original 2014 NA and EU release did not allow.

How the in-game rating actually works

The number on screen is calculated almost entirely from the two Miis’ birthdays. The system uses a zodiac-style lookup under the hood, and Nintendo has been clear since the 3DS days that the result is meant as a fun reading rather than a real game mechanic.

Personality has no effect on the percentage shown by the Tester. This was confirmed early on by community testers and matches what regular play shows: two Miis with clashing personalities can still score 100%, and two with identical sliders can score 20%. Personality and proximity do shape how the pair behaves day to day, but that is a different system from the Tester display.

Friendship ratings are calculated for same-gender pairs, family members, and Miis from very different age brackets. Romance ratings are reserved for pairs the game considers eligible to date. The eligibility rules differ across regions and have been broadened in Living the Dream, especially around same-sex relationships.

A common community trick is to set a Mii’s birthday to land in a compatible zodiac before adding them to the island. The formula is deterministic per birthday pair, so it is easy to engineer 90%+ readings if you care about the screen number. Just remember it does not change how they actually behave once they live next door to each other.

If the in-game Tester is mostly zodiac math, the more useful question is what to check before you build the pair. That is where this online tool focuses.

What this online Compatibility Tester checks instead

This online tool ignores birthdays entirely. There is no field for them and no zodiac lookup. Instead it reads two things: personality vibe overlap across the six Tomodachi Life vibe families (Easygoing, Romantic, Curious, Showy, Grounded, Competitive) and shared favorite activities typed in plain language.

Those two signals predict day-to-day chemistry better than birthdays do. If two Miis share grounded energy and both list cooking as a favorite, they are likely to feel like neighbors. If one is showy-competitive with no shared anchor activity, the pair is going to fight unless you shape the environment around them.

The tool is designed for the moment before a Mii exists in your save. Sketch the pair here, see whether the chemistry reads as believable, then commit to building both characters in-game with confidence. Think of it as a complement to the in-game Tester, not a replacement.

Everything runs locally in your browser. There is no account, no save data uploaded, and nothing tracked. The tool is also marked Beta on purpose: results are calibrated for cozy, long-save players who want their islands to feel like a slice-of-life sitcom, not for min-maxers chasing the highest possible event count.

How to read your forecast

The Tester will return one of four readings. None of them are bad — they each suggest a different way to play the pair.

Slow-burn pair

These two have one or two real anchors but need shared time and a few catalysts before chemistry surfaces. Place their apartments adjacent, give both Miis the same hobby item (Wii U, sketchbook, frying pan), and let them run for a week. Patient players are rewarded with one of the more memorable couples on the island. Gift angle: matching cardigans or anything that comes in a pair.

Steady friends

Solid platonic chemistry, low drama, no real risk of clashing. These pairs make excellent roommates, reliable problem-solvers when other Miis ask for advice, and good emotional scaffolding for more chaotic relationships nearby. Gift angle: a shared picnic set or a board game; placement tip: keep them on the same floor as a bigger event-driver Mii so they have things to react to.

Instant chaos

Fast bond or fast feud — either way your island gets stories. Best with the player nearby to mediate, because chaotic pairs benefit from your interventions (gifts, problem-solving, travel tickets). Do not park them in a corner and forget about them. Gift angle: a peace-offering donut or a costume that gives them a reason to be silly together.

Mismatched

No shared anchor activity and clashing vibes. It is possible to make work, but not where to invest your first 100 hours of play. If you really want the pair to happen, change one Mii’s favorite hobby item, move them onto different floors, and let other relationships carry the social load while these two warm up slowly.

How to improve Mii compatibility in-game

The number the Tester shows is fixed by birthdays, but actual relationship outcomes are very malleable. A few interventions matter more than people expect.

Apartment placement

Miis are far more likely to start social events with their immediate neighbors than with anyone else. If you want a confession, a friendship, or a roommate-style bond, move the target pair adjacent before triggering anything else. Most apparent randomness in Tomodachi Life is actually proximity-driven.

Shared hobby items

Give both Miis the same item: Wii U, frying pan, skateboard, sewing machine, paint set. Matching items meaningfully increase the chance of best-friend and romance interaction events. Two Miis with the same Wii U on their shelves run into each other in cutscenes constantly.

Travel tickets

When a Mii asks for a vacation, send them with the Mii you want them to bond with. A successful trip can push a relationship from Good to Great in a single event. Use travel tickets intentionally — they are one of the highest-leverage relationship tools in the game.

Same favorite foods

Find a Super All-Time Favorite food that both Miis love and feed it to them on the same day. The mood boost is real and indirectly strengthens the social events the game queues for them. Use the Food and Gift Tracker to remember which foods got that maximum reaction so you do not have to re-test them later.

Solve their problems consistently

A Mii with high personal happiness is more receptive to social risk: confessions, marriage proposals, helping a friend with a problem. Solving problems quickly when they appear keeps the whole island warmer and pairings progress faster as a result.

The birthday trick — only at creation

If you want guaranteed high in-game Tester scores for narrative reasons, set the Miis’ birthdays to compatible zodiacs at creation. Note that this only changes the percentage on the Tester screen — it does not change whether the pair actually gets along. Use it for cosmetic satisfaction, not as a substitute for the steps above.

Compatibility Tester FAQ

Does the in-game Compatibility Tester actually affect Mii relationships?

No. Nintendo describes the rating as ‘just for fun.’ Actual relationships are shaped by personality, proximity, items, gifts, and how often the player intervenes — none of which the Tester reads.

Can I test same-sex Mii pairs in Living the Dream?

Yes. The 2026 Switch release includes same-sex romance ratings, which were not available in the 2014 NA/EU release of the original game. Friendship ratings have always supported any pair.

Why does my 100% pair keep fighting?

Because the Tester rating is zodiac-based, not behavior-based. Two clashing personalities can still score 100%. Move them apart, change one Mii’s hobby items, or wait the mood out — the percentage will not predict whether they get along.

Does changing a Mii’s personality change the rating?

No. The score is locked to birthdays. Personality changes affect day-to-day behavior — gift reactions, walking style, how they cheer up other Miis — but not the Tester percentage.

Can two Miis with 0% still get married?

Yes. A low score makes positive interactions slightly less frequent, but marriage is possible if both Miis are eligible and you nudge them with adjacent apartments, matching hobby items, and a successful travel ticket trip.

How is this online tool different from the in-game Tester?

The in-game Tester reads zodiacs. This tool reads personality vibes and shared activities. It is a different question, asked at a different time — before you have built either Mii. Use both for the fullest picture.
