Design Notes

Island Breeze: the visual rules behind TomoTools.

Island Breeze turns TomoTools design notes into a readable editorial page about softness, rhythm, and toy-like physicality.

North star

Calm, not clinical

The site avoids hard-edged SaaS rhythm in favor of rounded clusters, soft depth, and more breathing room.

Surfaces

Layer instead of outlining

Sections are separated with tone shifts and elevation, not harsh 1px lines. Cards should feel stacked, not boxed in.

Typography

Editorial whimsy

Plus Jakarta Sans carries the whole system, using stronger hierarchy and tighter display spacing to keep it polished.

Core principles

  • Use surface hierarchy to create calm boundaries instead of visible chrome.
  • Prefer generous corner radii and wider spacing before adding more decoration.
  • Let at least one section on each major page feel airy and asymmetrical.
  • Buttons should feel soft and toy-like, with clear focus feedback and readable contrast.

What to avoid

  • Do not rely on heavy black shadows or rigid divider lines to create structure.
  • Do not compress too much content into a single pane just because it technically fits.
  • Do not let decorative softness reduce accessibility, contrast, or keyboard clarity.

A design note turned into a live site

Island Breeze exists to make the system legible: the rules are soft, but they are still real rules.
